Helpful Hints from Jill:
1. If you are registering a bull calf, please remember to forward a hair
sample on the calf to the office. The registration cannot be processed
without this.
2. If you are registering ET animals, please make sure that a copy of
the flush report is forwarded by your veterinarian or flush technician
to the office. This is required for all ET progeny.
3. All flush dams must be DNA registered. ET progeny from the resultant
progeny cannot be registered until testing is complete.
4. Have questions about DNA? Here are some helpful tips:
- Collect the hair from the tip of the
tail (switch). Comb or brush the tail to remove the dead hair. Wrap
about 5 strands around a finger, about 2 inches away from the skin,
and give a sharp pull. Inspect the hairs and make sure the follicles
are still attached to the hair shafts. Hairs with no follicles cannot
be processed for DNA. Pull about 20 hairs per animal.
- Send by courier to Saskatchewan Research
Council, Bova-Can Laboratory, 15 Innovation Blvd., Saskatoon, SK, S7N
2X8 Ph: (306) 933-7700 Fax: (306) 933-5505
- The cost of processing hair samples
is $50 per animal plus taxes. However, some work may be more costly
if it is required by the lab to do extensive analysing of the sample.
Invoices for Jersey work will be issued by Jersey Canada. Do not send
money to Bova-Can
- Once the hair samples are analysed,
the results will be returned to Jersey Canada. A copy of the results
will be retained in the office. As well, a copy will be sent to you.
The invoice will be sent at this time.
5. If you have received a registration paper that has an error on it,
this is not a big problem. Please forward the incorrect paper back to
the office, with notation on what the error is. It will be corrected and
re-issued to you right away.
6. Have you tried electronic registrations? First time online registrations
receive $2.00 off each animal that is 0-3 months of age! Contact Jill
for password and instructions!
7. All dairy producers in Canada are able to register through their Dairy
Herd Improvement program using the ERA program. CanWest DHI, PATLQ, and
ADLIC are all set up to help you keep your registrations up to date, and
reduce your paperwork!
8. Do you think you might have a Star Brood Cow? Points for cows are calculated
upon request, and we would be more than happy to do this. There is no
cost. Each qualifying cow is issued a Star Brood Cow Certificate, and
this achievement is added to the pedigree as well. Points are calculated
on minimum deviations above herdmates for progeny production, as well
as classification points on progeny. For full rules and procedures, contact
the office.
9. We have full details available on the Constructive Breeder Award program,
plus all other Jersey Canada awards. Contact us for a listing.
