The farm
in located in Rochester, Alberta, about an hour drive north of
Edmonton. We farm approximately 2700 acres, and in addition to
milking over 200 Jerseys, we also operate a purebred Angus cow-calf
herd. Most of the Jerseys are housed in a free-stall barn, while
a portion of the herd (high genetic animals and show cows) are
housed in a tie-stall. All cows are milked through the parlour.
Unique Valleystream Genetics is a total family operation. David
is directly involved in the breeding of cows and implanting of
embyros, and makes many of the breeding decisions, in consultation
with the rest of the family. Growing up in a Holstein background,
David still appreciates the necessity for productive, profitable
cows. Tracy has a definite eye for type, and is heavily involved
with showing Unique Valleystream cattle in Western Canada and
as far away as the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto. Daughter Casey
is heavily involved with Jerseys in 4-H, and in 2004 received
Supreme Champion with her heifer at the Alberta Provincial 4-H
show, the first time a Jersey has taken this honour. Both Casey
and her younger brother Lee have growing Jersey herds of their
own, with Lee already developing an EX-90-2E cow and two VG-87
animals. |
